Possessing a true and clear treble voice, Luca Brugnoli has already started to make his mark on the music world. His sophomore album, “Through My Eyes,” promises even more special things to come.
CMM: Luca, can you tell us about how you discovered you could sing?
LB: I used to sing all the time between the ages of 3 and 7. When I was in year 2 at school a teacher suggested to my Mum that I should get singing lessons as she felt that I could develop my voice further
CMM: You were part of the renowned Libera Boys choir. Do you have any special memories from performing with them?
LB: I am still part of Libera Choir. They have given me the confidence to do what I do. I cannot choose any particular memory as I have been with them for 6 years and it’s all amazing but I can remember feeling really excited, nervous and everything rolled into one performing in Japan when I was only 9 to over 5000 people!
CMM: Another big moment in your career so far was placing in the BBC Young Chorister of the Year competition. Can you share any highlights from that experience?
LB: I was thrilled to have received the runner up prize. The experience was great and all the judges’ feedback positive to learn from. It was also really good to see the behind the scenes and how the BBC programme was constructed, obviously what goes on air is very different to what the live session is like.
CMM: You’ve worked with some incredible people such as Karl Jenkins and Jonathan Antoine. What have been some of the tips you picked up from them?
LB: Sir Karl Jenkins conducted a concert that I was invited to be part of. His skill, perfectionism and music mastery was awe inspiring to see. Jonathan Antoine was so kind to meet me and talk music. He gave me some performance tips and vocal tips about creating volume. His voice is ‘insane’ and I can only aspire to having his vocal control. More importantly in meeting Jonathan it made me realise that in such a competitive industry it’s really important to stay true to yourself and just be you
CMM: Another special collaboration was with Dominic Ferris, Producer & Global Ambassador to Steinway & Sons. Can you tell us a little more about how Dominic has contributed to your new album?
LB: Dominic is my mentor, friend and manager (alongside Mum). He is the best role model any would-be musician could have. His focus, attention to detail but moreover genuine care for what I do has really helped me in the last year. He has played for all my songs. Singing to Dom’s accompaniment is so easy as he literally breathes and lives the music through his piano and is led by my vocals enabling me to phrase and time the songs in my own way.
CMM: “Through My Eyes” is a more crossover album than your first. What are some of the songs and styles you are excited to share with your listeners?
LB: Wow this is a hard question as in making the album it was really important for me to be able to prove to my audience that I can sing all music genres. My favourite to share would be The Prayer. In this song I sing in both English and Italian plus do all the harmonies which probably best demonstrates what I can do. There may also be some surprises for some like my own version of the well-known 1980s pop song Take on Me by a-ha and also my cover of Evanescence’s Bring me to life. I also think the two original songs My Mama and I Am written by Macari-Ferris show my story telling ability and the lyrics will resonate with many.
CMM: What are some of your dreams with music?
LB: I would love to continue recording and hopefully start to collaborate with other artists. I’m also working on song writing so more originals can be produced and improving my piano and guitar skills. I would love to tour here in the UK and then Europe and beyond. I was so privileged to be able to perform solo in Manila last year that I have definitely got the taste for travelling. I’m also interested in acting, so it would be great to act and perform. Of course eventually it would be amazing to become a signed artist and be an ambassador for a charity to ‘give back’. My family has worked so hard under the ‘independent artist’ label and I have some amazing supporters, it is really important for me that my music is used for good.
