New Releases: Laura Auer “Autumn”

American singer Laura Auer releases “Autumn”

Laura Auer committed to a crazy recording schedule of releasing four albums in one year, one for each season. “I’m putting the finishing touches on the last one and that will drop right after the new year so then I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, you might remember what life was like before the project!’ You’re planning six months ahead so we’re recording one while mixing the one before, and shooting music videos for the one being released and promoting that one, and that was crazy.”

Laura describes the theme of the project as balancing classical and crossover. For Autumn she drew on her favorite parts of the season, “Phantom of the Opera, the Renaissance Fair. All the golden browns, falling leaves.” She wanted “sweeping strains, spookiness” “melancholy” and “haunting melodies.” It mirrored her own mood, “That’s kind of how I feel right now. Everything’s kind of wrapping up and preparing for hibernation.”

Carrickfergus has been one of the fan favorites on the album so far. “I had to do that one,” Laura enthuses. “I actually changed the words a little bit and I felt okay about that because it’s public domain at this point from a long, long, long, long time ago. Everybody has their own version of what they think the song is about. To me, it was more about an older man’s reminiscence of his younger fond memories before passing, and he can’t get there right, but he gets there in the end when he passes away, to over to the other side Castle bar by the sea, so I wanted to just be really blunt about that. And so I have my own version of those lyrics in that song.”
