English mezzo-soprano Sophie Clarke has released a new collection of inspirational music entitled, “Then Sings My Soul” today. The album consists of seven songs, most familiar to crossover fans and two delightful new additions “I Watch the Sunrise” and “A Clare Benediction.”
Although her direction is clearly crossover, Sophie’s classical training is also evident. Her voice is even, vibrant, and diction precise. There is a sincerity and warmth that is sure to resonate with listeners. The album begins and ends with her acapella singing, which is a rare treat for a voice of this richness.
“I have been very fortunate to perform as a soloist in some beautiful cathedrals and churches around the world, singing a wide variety of hymns, religious songs and secular pieces. These experiences and pieces of music have inspired me in my musical career and also in my personal life which has led me to create my new album ‘Then Sings My Soul.'” Sophie shared with us.
‘A Clare Benediction’ which Sophie describes as a “lesser known musical gem” by John Rutter displays the higher extension of her voice. “This piece is a prayer for guidance and
protection, when sleeping or awake, in this life and the next and it was introduced to me by my lovely singing teacher Ranee Seneviratne. It’s very close to my heart and I’m so pleased to include it on this album.”
The arrangements on ‘Then Sings My Soul’ were created in collaboration with orchestrator, Matteo Ressa “Firstly, I always think about how I want people to feel when listening to the music and also how I can best serve the words. I think the poem of every
song is the most important and I always want my recordings to reflect this. I work with a wonderful orchestrator, Matteo Ressa, who always creates arrangements that captivate exactly what I want to express.”
