Founded by artistic director D.F., Shen Yun is a performing arts company dedicated to reviving traditional Chinese culture. The shows offer an immersive experience featuring traditional dancing, short skits, and musical performances. Each year’s touring shows present entirely new storylines and scores, ensuring a fresh experience for returning audiences.
The Shen Yun orchestra is unique, blending Western and Chinese instruments (including the erhu and pipa) and styles. In the show program, it is described as a “harmonious blend of traditional Eastern melodies with Western orchestration.”
Audiences will be captivated by the beauty and elegance of the dancers. The vibrant colors and unique movements, such as the fan shen—rapid-paced arm movements resembling a cross between a windmill and a flower blowing in the wind—and the firebird, a stunning kick/split featured in all the group’s promotional materials, are particularly impressive. The male dancers tumble and kick (zan bu, resembling martial arts) impressively across the stage. The discipline and precision are striking, and when paired with the beautiful instrumental music, it makes for a very pleasant afternoon.
Technology is cleverly used to portray the story of the “glorious culture.” 3D projections introduce the audience to the celestial, and the stage is designed so performers can seemingly “jump” from the stage right into the sky, adding a magical element to the storytelling. The singing is emotional, with themes that contrast sharply with modern-day communist China. Each number is introduced by a charming pair of hosts speaking in both English and Chinese.
