Olga Thomas has released a new album of evocative music entitled “Darkness and Light.” Although brief, the 8 songs add up to only 9 mins, the pictures painted will deeply move listeners in what has already been a difficult 2025.
Crossover Music Magazine: What is the inspiration behind your latest album “Darkness to Light”?
Olga Thomas: This album embodies a profound journey that transcends the mere physical realm; it reflects a deep psychological transition from a place of darkness towards illumination. Each composition serves as a sonic accompaniment to the narratives depicted in visual media, be it films or television. My aim was to craft music that not only captures the essence of this transformative journey but also enhances the storytelling process, allowing audiences to feel the weight of darkness and the uplifting embrace of light.
Crossover Music Magazine: You have shared before that musical inspiration hits you all the time (even when driving!). Can you share any experiences of inspiration in this new album?
Olga Thomas: When approaching an album, it’s essential to view it as a cohesive narrative; “Darkness to Light” comprises eight distinct pieces that offer various perspectives on both darkness and light. For instance, ‘Steps in the Dark’ delves into thriller territory, brimming with tension, danger, and a palpable sense of anticipation. I often find inspiration in cinematic works, where I seek to reinterpret their musical choices with my unique perspective. Additionally, the natural world profoundly impacts my creativity—be it the breathtaking allure of a sunrise or a fleeting moment with an extraordinary creature. Ultimately, all these diverse inspirations intertwine to shape the overarching narrative of the album.
Crossover Music Magazine: When you are experiencing challenging situations in your life, do you have an album or group of songs you turn to for comfort, or is it time for new inspiration at the bench?
Olga Thomas: There are indeed specific pieces and albums I gravitate towards during tumultuous times. My preferences can shift daily, reflecting my mood, but at this moment, I find immense solace in the poignant ‘Lara’s Theme’ from Dr Zhivago and compositions by Gustav Mahler. Their ability to convey raw, moving emotions resonates deeply with me, offering a comforting sanctuary amid chaos, while also serving as a wellspring of inspiration for my own creative endeavours.
Crossover Music Magazine: As a highly accomplished pianist and composer, what are some aspects you look for when considering music to add to your own library?
Olga Thomas: My criteria for expanding my music library encompasses a blend of personal taste and curiosity. I am particularly drawn to classical crossover genres, whether seeking familiar pieces reimagined by new artists or exploring previously undiscovered works. Often, the performer captivates me as much as the composition itself; my peers and talented musicians continually inspire my exploration. I remain enthusiastic about venturing into new genres, challenging my musical palate, which has led me to uncover extraordinary artists and compositions I might have missed otherwise.
Crossover Music Magazine: You have often shared sweet moments from your pets and students. What is a moment that has brought you light in 2025?
Olga Thomas: Reflecting on the past year, it’s challenging to pinpoint just a single moment of light, as there have been countless. My incredible piano students consistently bring joy into my life. Witnessing their dedication as they strive to become the best pianists they can be is immensely rewarding, and it is an honour to be a part of their journey. The true radiance shines through when they successfully pass their exams with merits and distinctions, a testament to our collective hard work.
Looking ahead to 2025, I am eagerly anticipating an upcoming performance with my talented friend, the beautiful soprano Joanna Forest. We will share some of my compositions for Valentine’s Day this February, and collaborating with Joanna always fills my heart with joy and illuminates my creative spirit.
