As a musician and storyteller, I’ve always believed that music has the power to transcend boundaries and connect us to the deepest parts of our humanity. With the Dallas String Quartet’s latest release, Romani: The Untold Story*, we aim to do just that—shine a light on the rich, often misunderstood culture of the Romani people and their incredible resilience through centuries of adversity.
Romani: The Untold Story* is more than an album for me; it’s a deeply personal mission. Born and raised in Romania, I was surrounded by the sounds of Romani music from a young age. I grew up listening to the virtuosic performances of Romani musicians—masters of the violin, viola, and other string instruments. These artists were not just entertainers; they were keepers of a rich musical tradition that spoke to the Romani spirit of survival, joy, and defiance.
The album weaves together traditional Romani melodies with classical influences, highlighting the profound contributions of Romani musicians throughout history. Featuring collaborations with the world-renowned London Symphony Orchestra, this project takes listeners on a journey through the historical struggles of the Romani people, including the harrowing period of World War II when they were targeted for extermination by the Nazi regime.
During my research and work on this album, I was struck by the stories of Romani musicians who, even in the face of unimaginable hardships, never stopped playing. Music was not just a form of expression for them—it was a lifeline. In the ghettos and concentration camps, they played to maintain their humanity, to resist despair, and to remember who they were. For many, the violin became a symbol of defiance against those who sought to silence them.
With the help of the London Symphony Orchestra, we were able to bring this emotional depth to life, merging the raw, expressive sounds of Romani music with the grand, sweeping arrangements that only an ensemble of this caliber can provide. Their collaboration helped us create a soundscape that honors the Romani spirit—a spirit that has endured despite centuries of persecution and prejudice.
This album is also our way of giving back. In partnership with the Roma Foundation, 50% of pre-order proceeds from *Romani: The Untold Story* will go toward providing boots for Romani children. This initiative is close to my heart, as it reflects the ongoing challenges faced by Romani communities today. By supporting this cause, we hope to provide tangible help while also raising awareness about the broader struggles and cultural richness of the Romani people.
Romani: The Untold Story* is not just an album—it’s a celebration of a people who, despite facing one of the darkest chapters in human history, have held onto their cultural identity with unwavering strength. Through music, the Romani have told their stories, expressed their pain, and celebrated their joys. Our hope is that this album will inspire others to listen, learn, and appreciate the resilience of the Romani spirit.
As you listen to this album, I hope you feel the emotions that guided us throughout its creation—the heartbreak, the hope, and above all, the unbreakable spirit of the Romani people. Through the evocative strains of the violin, the powerful arrangements of the London Symphony Orchestra, and the passionate performances of the Dallas String Quartet, we invite you to join us on this journey and honor the untold stories of the Romani.
