There are some artists you meet who make you feel instantly at ease, like you’re greeting an old friend rather than conducting an interview. Jonathan Antoine is one of those rare souls. His cheery hello and open-hearted conversation flow with the kind of warmth that has endeared him to audiences since his unforgettable debut on Britain’s Got Talent.
Now, Jonathan has even more reason to be smiling. The fan favorite has joined forces with Belgian legend Helmut Lotti for the latter’s new album, and their collaboration has blossomed into a friendship that feels as natural as it does inspiring.
A Meeting of Kindred Spirits
Jonathan recalls that their first encounter wasn’t planned at all.
“It was quite spontaneous, as I like to do things. So I was doing a one-off show randomly in Antwerp, Belgium, and he seemingly heard about it. He came down not just to the show, but he came to my hotel to say hello.”
That thoughtful gesture stayed with him. Jonathan describes Helmut as a “top-of-the-line guy,” and adds that their bond was instant.
“We both have autism, and so we communicate in a slightly different way to how some other people might, so it’s just an instant way of connecting.”

“Core ’ngrato” Reimagined
Jonathan, who is still managed by his mother and sister, was invited to join Helmut in the studio for his new album.
“I just got to hop along for the ride, and it was so, so incredible. I’ve got to go to Belgium to record it. Not a bad life.”
Their duet, a fresh interpretation of the Neapolitan classic Core ’ngrato, allowed Jonathan to revisit a piece he has performed for more than a decade — but in a completely new light.
“I thought it was such a cool opportunity to be able to revisit something that I’ve done in a completely different context, as a duet. To just be able to have fun with the piece, not have any sort of pre-notions… was super magical.”
The process, he says, felt like building a puzzle together.
“It was like completing a puzzle, the idea of getting to match Helmut’s performance and style, but still bring my voice to it… It really lent itself to this magical unity, this wonderful dualism of these two very different male voices.”
The collaboration didn’t stop in the studio. The pair also performed their duet at Antwerp Central Station, turning the bustling landmark into a stage. Jonathan remembers the energy vividly:
“It had this magical, this electric energy.”
Charting His Own Course
Jonathan Antoine teases a new albumOf course, every Jonathan Antoine project comes with the inevitable question: when will fans get new solo music? And the good news is, the wait is nearly over.
Jonathan is still weighing possible titles for his upcoming record. Two contenders so far are Galleon — “because it’s going places. It’s quite mysterious. It’s traveling through the water” — and Against All Odds:
“Despite everything, we’re still here. We’ve still got it.”
He hints that either of those could change, but what is certain is that the album will break fresh ground.
“There’s all kinds of mysterious and fun elements that are, again, different from the last 10 years of stuff I’ve been doing in terms of the material. I would call it generally a lot more contemporary, but it may be contemporary for a different age… I’m hoping to capture a little bit of that.”
Much of the recording has been made possible by the generosity of a supporter who helped him build a home studio. That independence has allowed Jonathan to experiment and refine his process.
“Now we find that we just capture magical stuff within very few takes. It’s just the reality of it… we look back and often the first one is the best one.”
Looking Ahead with Gratitude
Jonathan’s self-deprecating humor shines when he talks about dabbling in production:
“In my spare time, I like to try and do a little bit of production and write some stuff. I will admit, I’m not very good at it. I’m not good at making things sound good with technology, just with my mouth.”
But behind the jokes lies a deep sense of gratitude and purpose. When asked what his dream outcome for the new album might be, Jonathan bursts into a smile you can hear through the words:
“100 million sales. Take me to the moon. Play it on the sun. Play it on Saturday. I don’t know — I just want people to have something lovely to listen to whilst they’re enjoying their beautiful lives.”
And then, in a softer moment, he reflects on what his fans — his beloved Fantoines — mean to him:
“I’ve been with people through the last years of their lives. People have lived with me, kind of as a part of their story, as a part of their soul. I’ve been able to have little pieces of their stories as a part of my soul… All I can ever say is thank you and try my best to make these things so that these tokens of my love, the depth of my love, and how appreciative I am, just to show one-millionth of the love that they’ve given to me. I can only hope that they feel just a little bit.”
With such humility and joy at the heart of his artistry, it’s no wonder Jonathan Antoine continues to touch lives everywhere. His collaboration with Helmut Lotti is just the beginning of a thrilling new chapter — and one that promises music filled with heart, honesty, and hope.

I can’t wait to see the interview with Jonathan Antoine. As a dedicated Fantoine I am eagerly awaiting news of his new album!
Thank you for this lovely article about Jonathan, and of course I have October 12th on my calendar to listen to the whole interview. It’s heartwarming to hear how friendships blossom and new music is made. Our world is a better, brighter place because of folks like Jonathan and Helmut. And, oh, the music!
I have been listening to music all my life but occasionally instrumental classic genre as it made me rather sad – and thought I had heard it all until I caught this young tenor’s golden livechanging voice -{ certainly mine) and never imagined I would hear this evocative emotional rendering of some of Opera’s greatest arias! A Tenor who colours the lyrics and transforms them to a vivid picture! PHENOMENAL! A great loss to opera if he gives it a miss as his acting abilities match that golden voice & heart!
