What is it?

Citizens of Song –  Music Together From Afar seeks to unite the world and foster peace through song. Each online concert takes the audience on a musical journey to a new destination with a new musical theme direct from the performers’ own homes. Having already virtually travelled to Ireland, United Kingdom, and the USA, reaching over 70,000 people on all continents of the world, the show now presents it’s Christmas Gala Concert with over 25 acts, and up to 400 performers from around the world including orchestras, dance companies, choirs, bands and soloists.

 How did it start?

Irish singer Rebecca Winckworth known for her performances and worldwide tours with shows such as Anúna, Celtic Nights and Celtic Woman, came up with the idea for Citizens of Song during the strictest and longest quarantine in the world, where she was living in Medellín, Colombia, South America. Every night at 8pm, for two months, Rebecca sang one song for her neighbours from her balcony and this story made international news. See Irish headline news with RTÉ here, Virgin Media NEWS here, and Colombian national news here. During these extremely challenging and stressful times, Rebecca realised how powerful music is in uniting people and spreading joy and hope no matter our perceived differences, fears or challenges. She decided to recreate this effect from her balcony to a world stage and an audience quite literally, across the globe. Thus, the online concert series of Citizens of Song was born.

“Covid19 has been devastating to the livelihoods of our artists. Though our theatres are closed, the show simply must go on, we must keep our music and arts alive.” Says Founder Rebecca, who created this organisation from strict quarantine in her apartment where she sang from her balcony for her neighbours every night for two months. “I saw how my nightly song brought all my neighbours together for a moment of peace during these extremely different times and I thought to myself, I need to replicate this on an international level with global impact!”.
